Ministry of Transport and Works
The Ministry of Transport and Works was created in January 1998 and encourages national growth and development within the context of the National Industrial Policy. The Ministry includes functions and programmmes drawn from the former Ministries of Local Government and Works, Public Utilities, Transport and Health. As the name suggests, the Ministry is responsible for the island's land, sea and air transport as well as the majority of the road network, including bridges, drains and embankments. The Ministry through its various agencies, including the National Works Agency, the Ministry fulfills its mandate of providing a safe and efficient transportation system as well as the building and maintenance of quality roads for its populace and others who have to travel on them.
Mission Statement To contribute to the economic growth and social development of Jamaica by securing resources and providing effective policies, planning, standards and regulations for:
- the provision of safe and sustainable transport systems for the movement of people and goods
- the achievement of efficient, high quality and timely architectural engineering and technical works.
