The Jamaica Rifle Association

Website: http://www.jamaicarifleassociation.org

Our membership is made up of a wide cross section of society, with everyone just shooting for the love of the sport and competition. In rifle shooting, we shoot several competitions annually, the BWIA International Cup (formerly the Benson and Hedges cup) shot in Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados. The Connought Shoot in Canada, Bisley in England. Cible Dor Cup in Barbados and the Copa Del Caribe in Martinique. We also shoot several competitions locally. The main discipline has changed over the years with the pistol becoming the more prominent discipline. Pistol shooting competitions have always been at the club but teams have been competing internationally since the early nineties. There are several disciplines in pistol shooting, i.e. target pistol .22 shot at 25m. Center fire pistol .38 special and .32 shot at 25m, .177 air pistol shot at 10m. Combat or International Pistol Shooting Confederation (IPSC) shot at between 1 to 50 yards and beyond at stationary and moving targets. Some of the competitions shot in pistol are the Florida Open, The world shoot (held every three years, its like the Olympics of shooting), the Limited and Open nationals in Illinois. We have over twenty shooters who dedicate themselves to being the best they can be at the sport and have proven it may times over by either winning or coming in the top three in the respective class on many occasions. The rifle association has only three shooters who are rated in the Caribbean as Master Class shooters by the United States Pistol Shooting Association. They are Ronald Brown, who has been shooting since 1982, Anthony Johnson from 1995 and Patrick Evelyn. They have been shooting since 1982. Whatever the successes have been over the last 104 years are largely as a result of the wonderful cooperation and support we have had from successive governments, the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the Jamaica Defence Force, with financial support from some of our few sponsors willing to recognize shooting as a serious and competitive sport. Sponsors such as Air Jamaica, American Airlines, BWIA, Sports Development Foundation, Jamaica Olympic Association, Arms and Ammo Ltd, Sasco Distributors, FX Traders, Pure Bulk Syrups, Manufacturers Sigma Merchant Bank, Wray and Nephew, Super Clubs and Sandals.
