The Jamaica Computer Society
The
Jamaica Computer Society was established in 1975, with the principal aim of
setting up and maintaining standards for professionals.
Accomplishments to date include : Establishment of the Jamaica Computer Society
Education Foundation (JCSEF) whose major focus is the implementation of
computer labs in all categories of schools across the island. The JCS is
working with the Foundation and the relevant Government
agencies to tailor a Computer Science curriculum for schools.
Collaboration with Government in the formation of national policies.
Collaboration with the University of the West Indies (UWI) and the University
of Technology (UTECH) formally CAST, in developing computer Science curriculum
to design programs to train people in specific products.
Sponsorship of two scholorships for gifted, underprivileged children, to study
Computer Science at the University of the West Indies (UWI) and the University
of Technology (UTECH).
Establishment of international chapters starting with the JCS Toronto Chapter
in August 1993.
Establishment of a bulletin board to give members and non-members information
on job placement, product advertisement, news, research and development
(R&D) tools, and international links to other associations.
An Annual Conference to provide a forum where industry specialists, decision
makers, and end users can assemble to exchange ideas, share experiences, and
demonstrate innovations in the application of information technology to meet
contemporary and future information requirements. The First JCS Conference was
held in 1976.
